Tri-County Technical Center Students Test Innovative Traps
Students in the Pre-Technical Program (Alternative Energy) at
Tri-County Technical Center in Dexter recently spent the day Ice Fishing
on Lake Wassookeag using the solar powered ice fishing traps that they
constructed. They also used solar energy to cook their lunch out on the
ice. It was not only an educational experience, but a fun way to utilize
solar power as a part of their classroom studies.

Tri-County Technical Center Local Food Bank Contribution
Students at Tri-County Technical Center in Dexter completed a two
month-long food drive in January 2010 as part of a community service
project. They collected a total of 922 pounds of food and $58 in
contributions. The food was distributed to the local Food Cupboard in
Dexter. Each of the ten program areas participated and competed to be
the group that brought in the largest number of pounds of food items.
The Health Occupations T1 students gathered the most pounds of food
(208) and will have a pizza party for their efforts!
Special thanks to the crew from the First Free Baptist Church for
picking up and delivering the food to the food cupboard.

Michael Woodbury
Selected as CTE Student of the Year
at
Tri-County Technical Center
Michael Woodbury has been
selected as the Career and Technical Education Student of the Year at
Tri-County Technical Center. He is a senior at Nokomis Regional High and
is completing his second year of training in the Criminal Justice
Program at TCTC. Michael has been the Chairperson of the TCTC Student
Leadership Team, the Reporter for the SkillsUSA State Officer Team, a
lieutenant in the Criminal Justice Class, the varsity soccer captain at
Nokomis, the Battalion Commander of the Nokomis JROTC program, and the
commander of the JROTC Raider Team. He is also a part of the National
Color Guard Team that competes in Daytona, FL, each year.
Michael was honored at a dinner and ceremony at Kennebec Valley
Community College in Waterville on May 3, 2008. This is a statewide
recognition and other CTE students and their families from schools
across Maine joined him at the event.
Michael won a gold medal in
the Crime Scene Investigation competition at the state SkillsUSA
competitions in Bangor in March and will be going along with his
teammates to Kansas City, Missouri in June to compete in the National
SkillsUSA competitions.
Michael plans to become a
Marine in the United States Armed Forces, and to attend Husson College
in Bangor, ME, for Criminal Justice and Psychology and participate in

GRAPHIC DESIGN &
COMMUNICATIONS STUDENTS AT TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL CENTER RECEIVE
CERTIFICATION
Four students at Tri-County Technical
Center (TCTC) recently passed the National Adobe Visual Communications
Certification exam! This accomplishment entitles them to be an “Adobe
Certified Associate” - a student with validated entry-level skills
required to plan, design, build, and maintain information using
different forms of digital media such as Adobe Photoshop CS3. Possessing
this certification will give these students an edge in most any industry
that requires the knowledge of digital media tasks. The standards these
students possess will help them connect with colleges and can result in
earning college credit. The certification can be taken anywhere -
college, out of state and even to the workplace.
Congratulations!!

Commercial
Truck Driving Competition
On Thursday May
8th and Friday May 9th, 12 students from the Commercial Truck Driving
Program at Tri-County Technical Center participated in the Career &
Technical Education Truck Driving Competition held at the Westbrook
Regional Vocational Center in Westbrook, ME. These students competed
against three other Maine Technical/Vocational Center Truck Driving
Programs - Region 3 Technical Center located in Lincoln, St. Croix
Regional Vocational Center located in Calais, and Westbrook Regional
Vocational Center located in Westbrook.
The driving and operating skills of these young men were tested by
taking a written general knowledge test similar to the State of Maine
permit test, a very detailed pre-trip inspection test, and an obstacle
course. The obstacle course had them driving a tractor trailer truck
through narrow tennis balls, making hard right and left turns, as well
as alley docking and parallel parking. These twelve young men
represented their school in an exceptional manner, and were able to
present their newly learned skills so well that they brought home three
trophies. The 1st place trophy was earned by Charles Longmuir and the
2nd place trophy was earned by Tyler Jakins. They are both Seniors at
Nokomis Regional High School. The Instructors; Mr. Dale Gerald and his
asst. Instructor Mrs. Vicki Kimball, were presented with the overall
trophy which is awarded to the school whose students earned the greatest
number of points.
The students were treated to an evening of pizza and bowling at WestPort
Lanes in Portland and stayed overnight at the Howard Johnson’s Plaza
Hotel also located in Portland. After a big hearty breakfast the
students went on to compete in a very strong way, and left for home with
big smiles, great trophies, and well deserved pride in themselves.

Tri-County Technical Center Signs Dual Enrollment Agreement with
Central Maine Community College
Tri-County Technical Center in Dexter is pleased to announce that it
has signed a Dual Enrollment Agreement with Central Maine Community
College located in Auburn, ME. Dual Enrollment is a program that
provides an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to enroll in
college courses while they are still in high school. Students may
receive high school and college credit for completed classes. In
order to reach a Dual Enrollment Agreement, instructors from TCTC meet
with instructors from a community college to compare curriculum, program
standards, and identify common areas that exist. Both parties
eventually sign a formal Dual Enrollment Agreement. The students
in the TCTC Health Occupations program can now choose to complete a
college course in Medical Terminology, MET 111, by successfully
completing the college's course requirements at TCTC. The students
will earn three college credits from CMCC. TCTC's long term goal
is to have all of its programs approved by community colleges and award
college credit upon successful completion of the course.

November 2005
The ABC
Craft Championships were held at the Augusta Civic Center on November
18, 2005. The purpose of this event is to expose students from all
across the state to the building trades profession. The event showcased
welding skills, pipe fitting, electrical, plumbing, construction, and
many other skills. The Building Trades program at TCTC participated in
the event by having student participants construct bird houses. The
Automotives program from TCTC also attended the event. Several TCTC
students participated by completing demonstrations in a variety of the
skills showcased. In one competition, students formed teams of 4 and
competed in a bridge building competition. Students had to construct a
small bridge using only popsicle sticks and a hot glue gun. Several
high schools participated along with UMO Engineering students. The TCTC
team of Mike Tripodi, Nick Smith, David Tozier, and Luke Pomerleau took
1ST PLACE in this competition, beating out engineering
students from the University of Maine who were awarded 2nd
place. Our TCTC first place team constructed a simple trestle bridge
that held 58 pounds. The TCTC team of Andrey Karachev, Loyd Willard,
Patrick Peterson, and Doug Bierschwale took 3rd place. |
