What is Reading Recovery?
Reading Recovery is an early intervention for children in grade one who need
extra help in reading and writing. This supplemental program allows children
a second chance for learning. One aim for this individual, short-term
intervention is for the lowest achieving children to make accelerated
progress and become competent, independent readers and writers in
approximately 12 to 20 weeks. In addition, Reading Recovery identifies those
children who are in need of a longer or different intervention.
Currently, 19 students in SAD 46 are benefiting from this instruction. The
Reading Recovery teachers at the Dexter Primary School are Jan Chase and
Joanne Hibbard.
Sandra Lowry
and Michelle Bowden are the Reading Recovery teachers at the
Garland Elementary School.
Reading Recovery Teacher Training
During the training year, teachers participate in a summer workshop focusing
on the administration, scoring, and interpretations of early literacy
assessments. Then teachers attend classes, which are held weekly, after
school for graduate level university credit and work with children on an
individual basis as part of their school day.
Continuing Professional Development Classes
Reading Recovery teachers continue to update and increase their knowledge
through ongoing Continuing Professional Development classes and peer
coaching. Teachers continue to come together to take turns teaching for one
another behind a one-way mirror while the rest of the class observes. Guided
by the teacher leader, the observing teachers discuss the effects of the
teacher's instructional decisions based upon newer practices in the reading
and writing processes. In addition, the teachers visit each other to observe
and talk about their teaching. The teacher leader who acts as a coach also
visits teachers.
