New PreK-8 School Project Page
For the latest information concerning the K-8 building project, click here for the newsletter or go to www.newschoolproject.info. New: Here are the results on the referendum vote for the new PreK-8 school:
SAD #46 school officials announced that $289,000 in private funding has been pledged by the William and Joan Alfond Foundation to fund a larger gymnasium as part of the new preK-8 school project. As a result of the donation, the gym size will increase from 7,000 square feet to 8,500 square feet so that two teams can practice at the same time, and will seat 400 spectators instead of 340. No local money will be needed to fund the expansion. Also, the PreK-8 school project has received a unanimous approval of the Concept Design by the State Board of Education on February 20, 2007. Click here for an article from the Bangor Daily News about it. SAD #46 will be building a new kindergarten through grade 8 school. SAD #46 was placed on a list for school districts needing a new school building by the State Department of Education in 1999. The district was actually moved up on to the list to be eligible for state funding for a school project about 2 years later. Since that time, successive boards and superintendents have been considering a new building configuration, assessing future needs for the SAD #46 District, and working on site possibilities. In April, 2005, the SAD #46 Board of Directors voted unanimously to proceed with planning a K-8 school building to replace the present Dexter Middle School, the Dexter Primary School, the Garland Elementary School and the Exeter Consolidated School. With the approval of the voters in the district, the new school site, based on an extensive search with many considerations, will be on the Fern Road just off the Garland Road. Among the reasons the site was chosen are: (1) it has public water and sewer; (2) it has three phase electrical power access (because of the Dexter Utility District facility on the Dunn Road); (3) it is closer to Garland and Exeter; (4) it has the required acreage for a school of 700+ students and, (4) there are willing sellers of this land at a price that is generally affordable. As the project continues to move forward, there are still opportunities for residents of SAD #46 to volunteer in many capacities such as school and grounds design, technology, and public relations. If you have questions or comments, please contact the Superintendent's Office at 924-5262 or any MSAD #46 Board member: John Parola (924-6401), Shawn Lancaster (924-5423), Steve Crane (379-2543), Gary Perkins (379-3633), Fred Wintle (924-0012), Andrea Rollins (924-6954), Rick Bilodeau (924-3120), Barbara Wakefield (277-4941), Gerry Rudmin (924-3676), Steve Foster (924-7523), Richard McInnis (924-3364), Sherree Mitchell (924-3038), or Mike Bennett (924-5995).
