A Message from Mr. Nelson

[Dexter Primary/Middle PTO] [DPS Parent Information] [DPS Principal's Message] [Kindegarten Registration]

Dear Parents, community members and staff,

I am extremely excited to be here and to join the "family." I look forward to meeting all of you at our Open House on the evening of September 15. I hope everyone has had an opportunity for some rest, relaxation, and family time this summer. It won't be long now until the excited sounds of students fill our halls and classrooms!

Welcome to the newest members of our school family, our incoming Kindergarten students. My wish for you is a successful and exciting school experience. I look forward to creating a partnership with you and your family to provide a positive, challenging, fun, and safe learning environment. For parents of first-time students, it may seem overwhelming at times for both the child and the parent. The overwhelming feeling won't last forever. The change is a big one for parents and families also! It may be time to establish some new routines at home. It's the start of a new adventure and it is part of growing up. If you have questions or concerns, please call us at 924-7671.

The maintenance crew is working diligently to get the school ready for the new school year. The smell of cleaners and floor wax are telling signs of preparation. My thanks to the maintenance people for all the work they do to get us ready for students.

There are some essential strategies that can significantly impact the opportunity for student success. Some of those basics are: Eat a healthy, nutritious breakfast; get plenty of rest; be in school every day (even a few minutes of missed instruction can impact learning); and know when to ask for help (Self-advocacy is difficult for some students. If your child is experiencing difficulty, contact the teacher. We are here to help students be successful.)

Students are our top priority. With your active support and cooperation, combined with our best professional efforts, we can ensure academic and emotional growth for your child this year! Our goal is to provide each student with a challenging and rigorous curriculum at the appropriate level for each student. To this end, I pledge that we will provide quality experiences, both academic and emotional, which recognize, support, and maintain high expectations for all students.

As your Principal, you can expect that I will reach out to you and ask for your support, ideas, suggestions, and involvement. I encourage you to join our team, where preparing young people for the future is our number one priority.

In order to give each child the best opportunity for success, we ask that you pledge to have high expectations for your child; to help your child attend school and be on time; to help your child find positive ways to resolve conflicts; and to communicate and work with teachers and school staff to support and challenge your child.

As we work together during the school year, I invite you to stay in contact. Let me know how you and your youngster(s) are experiencing school. Please know that your comments or concerns are important to me. Through teamwork, open and honest communication, and a dedication to continuous improvement, we can make our schools a safe, fun, and emotionally responsive place to grow.

I look forward to our work together as partners in learning. Here's to a terrific year! And as always, "GO TIGERS!"

Sincerely,

Dusty Nelson

Principal
