Latest News... June 2010 Click here for the results of the budget vote on June 8, 2010. March 2010 Parents & Community Invited to DRHS On Sunday, April 11, 2010 fifteen educators from the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC) will be on site at Dexter Regional High School as a part of the high schools accreditation process. Over the last year, the DRHS school community has been involved in preparing a self-study document that demonstrates ways in which the school is meeting the “Standards for Accreditation”. The educators will be at the school over a four day period, from April 11th to the 14th, reviewing the schools mission and expectations, written curriculum and course offerings, classroom learning activities, instructional materials, the daily schedule and the ways in which the school facility supports teaching and learning. An important component of the four day visit is time designated for parents and members of the community. Parents of students will be invited to meet with the educators from the Association and asked to discuss the school’s programs and services and share their thoughts about their student’s experiences at the high school. On Sunday, April 11th at 1:30 PM there will be a panel presentation in the cafeteria which parents and community members are encouraged to attend. At approximately 2:30 PM there will be a parent meeting with the visiting committee and all parents are invited to attend. Information gathered during those meetings will be shared with the entire visiting committee and incorporated into the schools evaluation report. Dexter Regional High School looks forward to this experience and sincerely appreciates the parent’s and community involvement in the on-site visit. Here is information for parents and guardians on Work Permits for students age 14 & 15. December 2009 Stephen Bell, principal of Dexter Regional High School, Kelly Tobin, teacher of the Special Ed. day treatment program, and Susan Abel, Librarian of DRHS, attended an accreditation seminar on December 11th at Ellsworth High School. Sponsored by the Commission on Public Secondary Schools of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the program was offered for principals and self-study steering committee members of schools scheduled to be evaluated Spring 2010. The seminar provided information to help schools finalize their plans for the evaluation visit and to learn more about the evaluation report and its review by the Commission on Public Secondary Schools. Participants shared their reactions to the self-study process with members of the Commission staff. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges, founded in 1885, is the oldest accrediting agency in the country and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a reliable agency to award accreditation in the New England area. The Association is a voluntary accrediting agency of more than 2000 public and independent schools, colleges and universities, and vocational, technical and career institutions. Of these, approximately 661 public K-12, middle/high, and high schools have been accredited or are candidates for accreditation through the Association’s Commission on Public Secondary Schools. The TumbleBookLibrary is a collection of TumbleBooks (animated, talking picture books) TumblePuzzles, and TumbleQuizzes, as well as TumbleResources for teachers. TumbleBooks are created from existing picture books which we have licensed from children's book publishers and converted to the TumbleBook format. These Read-Alongs highlight the sentences as they are being read, turn the page automatically, and offer the ability to follow along in 3 text sizes. They also include an innovative bookmarking feature, the ability to switch to manual in order to read at your own speed, and cool color options for the skin of our new Read-Along player. The collection features 8 categories containing nearly 125 Read-Along titles (and an additional 100 large print online titles): picture books, early readers, chapter books, middle school readers, YA/teen Novels, children's classics, classics and Shakespeare. Read-Alongs are great for emergent, struggling, and reluctant readers, and are an excellent tool for ESL students. ALG Drama Performance Sunday, May 10th at 3pm at the Dexter Regional High School, and Wednesday, May 13th, 6:30pm at the Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft was presented "Accepting The Fact." Written and performed by students from the Dexter area, this FREE 90-minute theatrical performance was centered around the lives of seven teens dealing with tobacco issues in the late 90's. The audience followed them through the normal trials and tribulations of a teen's senior year and then fast-forwards to a night 10 years later. It was then that we learned about how their lives unfolded since graduation. This production was sponsored through a grant from the American Legacy Foundation. The grant was co-written by Piscataquis Public Health Council and Healthy Maine Partnerships. Click here to see a copy of the parent letter sent home regarding the H1N1 Influenza virus. April 2009

TRI-COUNTY TECHNICAL CENTER RECEIVES MELMAC GRANT Tri-County Technical Center (TCTC) in Dexter has been awarded a MELMAC (Maine Educational Loan Marketing Corp.) grant from the MELMAC Education Foundation. TCTC is one of the thirty schools state-wide who were awarded an implementation grant and one of four Technical Centers. The funds granted to the schools are to be used for school- and community-based programs designed to increase students' aspirations for higher education and to help students connect those aspirations to a plan that ensures enrollment in post-secondary education immediately following high school graduation. This is the third round of funding that the Foundation has awarded to Maine high schools and Technical Centers. The grants for Technical Centers are for $48,000 to be used over a four year period. The Centers must provide $8,000 of matching funds in the last two years of the grant. TCTC also received a $5,000 planning grant from the Foundation in the fall of 2007. Since 2003, the MELMAC Education Foundation has worked with 52 (35%) of the 146 public and private Maine high schools. These 52 high schools work with almost 28,000 (39%) of all 71,000 Maine high school students. In addition, the Foundation has provided grants to vocational/technical programs who work with multiple Maine high schools, which may or may not receive MELMAC grants separately. Over $3.4 million has been awarded since 2003 (not counting this current round of awards). TCTC will be implementing the grant by involving all of their students in exploring their options in post-secondary education. College trips to two-, four-year, and technical college programs and businesses will occur. Other activities will include holding workshops on filling out college applications and financial forms, for both students and their parents, Transition Fairs, enrolling in Apprenticeships, and following up on student's plans after they graduate.
